Hidden in one of the many narrow streets of Funchal, you’ll come across one of the nicest cafes of the city. Behind a large stone gate on Rua dos Aranhas you’ll find a cozy courtyard and tiny cafe. We’re talking about Mercearia Dona Mécia. 

Since we’ve discovered this place, we’ve been totally hooked. We like the ambiance, the decor and the food and drinks they serve. Especially on hot summer days, there’s nothing like one of their freshly made lemonades. Naturally, they serve other drinks too. But really: try the lemonade!

If you have an appetite for a small bite, they have lots to choose from. You can order grilled sandwiches, quiches, and several typical Madeira pastries like pastel de nata. Food and drinks: absolutely okay at Mercearia Dona Mécia. Furthermore, it’s really relaxing to spend some time on their Mediterranean styled terrace. And last but not least, the staff is very nice and attentive.
